The software update is available for all iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S and the iPad.  Apple says the update will add 200 new features to your existing device.

Some of the highlights include

  • Improvements to the camera app
  • iMessage (native Instant Messaging platform rivaling Blackebery Messenger)
  • Integrated Twitter

How to perform update

  1. Update your iTunes to the latest version 10.5
  2. Plug your iphone into your computer and BACK UP THE the device.
  3. Perform the software update.
  4. Enjoy iOS 5.

Apple has released an OS update for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

The newst version, 3.1.3 (7E18), will replace current OS versions on all models of iPhone and iPod touch devices.

The update is available automatically through  iTunes.

Fixes
Highlighted below are the fixes Apple has detailed in the latest OS update.

  • Fix for iPhone 3GS battery level reporting
  • Fix for app crashes on launch
  • Fix for app crashes while using Japanese Kana Keyboard

Security
Several security fixes have also been implemented in the most recent OS update, including the following:

  • Playing a maliciously crafted mp4 audio file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
  • Viewing a maliciously crafted TIFF image may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
  • A person with physical access to a locked device may be able to access the user’s data
  • Accessing a maliciously crafted FTP server could result in an unexpected application termination, information disclosure, or arbitrary code execution
  • Mail may load remote audio and video content when remote image loading is disabled.
